Hiya Steve,

What's wrong with your car? If you're having difficulty in getting parts at the moment, you could also try the following:-

Mexican beetle specific parts:-

VW Classic Parts Center:- http://www.vw-classicparts.de/ (german only)

Antonio Trejo:- partsvw@hotmail.com (beware of UK customs import duty + VAT)

General beetle parts:-

GSF Car Parts:- http://www.gsfcarparts.com/

VW Heritage:- http://www.vwheritage.com/

Custom Speed Parts:- http://www.csp-shop.de/.

Note: You could get mexican beetle parts from CSP but they are more expensive.

I hope this helps and let me know how you get on.

Regards,

Phil

Nice one Phil, thanks for that,
I was after the diagnostic kit. I bought a 1600i a couple of months ago and it runs like a one legged t*rd.
I spoke to Manfred and he is pretty sure new 30 ECU relay and a clean out of the ECU faults could fix the problem.

I've found lots of info on digifant issues but mostly specific to Jettas and Passats here:

http://members.tripod.com/~fuelie/tuneup.htm

The main issue is fuel economy, down to about 25mpg (ish) so maybe it's in Emergency ECU setup but then again I could be way off the mark.

Really I think I could do with sorting it out and flogging it on as an an old skool tax free pre 73 might be a better option, based on the hassle Ive had trying to find resources for the 1600i.

Even the local pukka VW dealer wont touch it! Gutted cos it's a really nice bug and the mod cons are really cool.

Do you know anywhere in the UK that can fix a 1600i? I'd love to play around fixing and tweeking it but I just dont have the time.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Also what % am I looking at for UK duty and VAT?

Cheers
Steve

Where abouts are you in Surrey?

I work in Staines and I could pop round on my way back from work one night with my VAG1552 fault code reader to find out what's wrong with your car and clear the faults.

You can also get a VAG-COM (serial port) lead from eBay for about 20 quid. All you would then need to do is to get an OBD II socket to 3 pin mexican beetle socket adapter.

To make one, you will need to do the following:-

- Order an OBD II socket from S K Pang Electronics (based in the UK)

- Get three flat metal pins (you will need to solder the wires onto these pins)

- Heatshrink to insulate the flat pins

- A small ABS box to house the OBD II socket

The pinouts for my "1600i to OBD II" adaptor is on the 1600i website (http://1600i.de).

You could also look for a VAG1552 fault code reader on eBay but they will be more expensive.

Regards,

Phil

Hiya Steve,

You could post your work number or your mobile number and we could arrange a time and place to diagnose your car's problems.

It would only take me 5 minutes or less to find out roughly what's wrong with it. I have also got the VW booklets for the mexican beetle as well and could put them onto a CD if you like.

Regards,

Phil

OK matey...Im gonna post my work number cos Im paranoid about bots harvesting my mobile and then phoning spam to me...over cautious maybe but I work in IT and you see some weird things.
Give us a ring on 01784 444 239, after 5 tomorrow would be good as the boss will have toddled off so we can have a natter if Im not up to my eyes...but anytime is fine and then I'll give you my mobile so we can stay in touch.
Thanks for all the help.
Steve
