Hiya Seb,
You can very easily get ignition leads for the mexican beetle from VW Heritage. These HT leads are the long reach version of the standard carbutrettor beetle and fit onto the screw thread (with the pin taken off the screw thread). Replacement spark plugs for these vehicles are Bosch W8DC, W8DTC and are listed in my Parts Cross Reference list on the 1600i website.
They cost £20.95 per set and the VW Heritage part number is 905-QHT-015/MEX .
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Phil

I ordered those but they sent me the wrong ones, they didn't have the right ends for my dizzy cap. My cap has pins in it and the leads they sent have the older style connectors which don't grip the pins. They said they were right and I had to phone them more than once to get a refund. My VW main dealer nearby says that they might be able to get some but I expect they will be costly.

That's odd. My distributor cap does not have pins in it. A Golf Mk2 distributor cap (see my Parts Cross Reference list for further details) fits the mexican beetle distributor.
I would get those leads from VW Heritage and change your distributor cap (you can easily get the distributor cap from GSF).
That would be a far cheaper option than going to a VW dealer or getting them from the VW Classic Parts Center (in Wolfsburg).
Good luck with getting your car sorted,
Phil
