Its a long time since I posted, but I have recent problems with the speedo. I replaced the original KMH with a MPH speedo. I failed to photograph or note down all the connections (Iknow - stupid). So I enlisted the help of a local auto electrician, who got most functions working. However, I now have a spare wire, and the fuel guage does not work!
I have tried to work through the wiring diagrams, and to be honest what is on the site, does not compare to my Bug.
1996 Mexican 1600i, LHD.
Also, still cant get the fuel consumption above 25MPG. Tappets rattling to some tune too! Apart from that its a great little car.

Hiya Ian,
I have got all of the wiring diagrams (in english) for your car (however, I will need your email address so that I can email them to you).
Rattling hydraulic tappets are usually caused by the following:-
- Lack of use. The hydraulic tappets will usually stop rattling after approx. 15 minutes of use.
- Oil level too low (the oil level must be at or near max)
- Sludge within the engine oil. This can be easily cured by using Molyslip approx 200 miles before the next oil change and then use engine flush to flush out the sludge.
- Air present within the hydraulic tappets. If the above steps do not cure the hydraulic tappets problem, then the crankcase will have to be split so that you can service the hydraulic tappets.
Poor fuel economy is usually caused by the following (assuming that your engine has severe lack of power):-
- ECU's fault memory. Read the ECU's fault memory, rectify the faults and erase the fault memory.
- Fuel pressure incorrect. This can be caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator (have you tested the fuel injection system ?).
- Fuel leaks.
- Split, cracked or chaffed vacuum hoses. The vacuum hoses are in the following locations:-
- - Two on the inlet manifold below the throttle body
- - Fuel pressure regulator (in front of the fan housing)
- - Black plastic vacuum port on the ECU's case (underneath the rear left seat). Getting at the ECU is fairly difficult to do (it took me about 2 hours to get my one out).
- - Rubber hose inside the ECU's case from the vacuum port to the vacuum unit its self.
- Engine oil temperature and/or air temperature sender faulty or intermittant (I think you have already replaced a temperature sender from what I read from one of your previous posts).
I really need more details on what symptoms your car has got regarding poor fuel economy so that I can give you a more accurate answer. I have also just been reading your previous posts as well.
I also have the full service manuals for your car in english as well, but beware they are very large (typically about 50 to 100 pages each !!).
Good luck with your car,
Phil
