Rpm s all over the place.

why does my rpms constantly surge up and down when i pull up to a junction.Other than that she runs great.I was advised to replace the idle control relay (165 906 381) but hasent made any difference really,apart from cost me a tenner. Any ideas greatley appreciated.

Hiya Graeme,

The part that was replaced is relay 30 (the ECU's voltage control relay). Did you manage to check your ECU's fault memory ? If so, what errors were reported by the ECU ?

Relay 30 sometimes causes erratic idle speed, but other factors could also be involved. eg:-

- Sludge within the air filter box and breather pipe

- Idle speed stabiliser defective. To check this switch on the ignition (but do not start the engine). The idle speed stabiliser should buzz.

- Air leaks on vacuum hoses. Check the hoses for splits, chaffing and loosely fitting hoses in the following locations:-

- - Both vacuum ports below the throttle body

- - Vacuum port on the fuel pressure regulator (in front of the fan housing on the left hand side).

- - Vacuum hoses next to the ECU and inside the ECU its self.

- Fuel pressure or delivery rate incorrect. See my fuel injection documentation on http://www.1600i.de/1600i-tipps/fuel-pressure/MexicanBeetle1600iFuelInjectionSystemTesting.htm for further information.

Hi phil thanks for responding.Unfortunatley i wont be able to check any ecu faults etc,but i can check the other things you mentioned.Are some of the problems you mentioned (vaccuum pipes idle stabilizer valve etc) are these the sort of things that can go wrong on a vehicle that has only done 20k?.I will have to try something as it is really quite annoying.Thanks ,graeme
