Hi!
I want to know the gear ratios of 1600i beetles.
I saw the code in my gearbox and it's a 2BR but I can't find any gearbox with this code in the listing.
In an old magazine I found an article about testing a 1600i and the gear ratios acording that test was:
1st: 6.9 km/h @ 1,000 rpm
2nd: 12.8
3th: 19.9
4th: 29.6
Acording other gearboxes from older beetles, I think mexican are a bit shorter. I don´t understand that!
What are the differences with german Volkswagens?
Thanks!

Hi Fernando,
My 1300 has even shorter gear ratios than a standard 1600i gearbox. I'm guessing that a standard 1600i gearbox is approximately 125% (5/4) higher than a standard 1300 gearbox (I listened to the engine on both of them and looked at the speed they were doing).
According to the VW gearbox booklet it lists the gear ratios (gearbox code PE) as the following (but I don't believe them to be honest):-
Differential (final drive) 3.785 : 1
1st gear 3.78 : 1
2nd gear 2.06 : 1
3rd gear 1.26 : 1
4th gear 0.93 : 1
Reverse gear 3.79 : 1
Cheers,
Phil

Hi guys,
Phil is quite right, but according to Mr. Eckstein 4th gear is 0,89 instead of 0,93 (1200).
Differential gear is 4,375.
So in fact a 1600i gear box is equal to 1200 box up to 3rd gear, 4th gear is slightly longer than 1200.
best regards,
Matthias

That's the same as my 1300's gearbox, but that does not explain the higher speed from my 1600i's gearbox.
In my 1600i when the gearbox had it's original spec, the speed is 4th gear was 20% higher than it was in my 1300 (I noticed this by listening to the engine and saw how fast they were going in 4th gear). I'm guessing that 4th gear could well be 0.89:1 but the differential's gear ratio of 3.875:1 could also be correct.
Mr. Eckstein could well be right about 4th gear.
Cheers,
Phil

Hiya Fernando,
I've just quickly worked out that my 1600i (with it's modified gearbox) will do 35 km/h at 1,000 RPM.
I had actually measured my car (by ear) doing 61 km/h at 1,700 RPM.
Cheers,
Phil
