Hi VWGirl,
nice Picture.
I think your Mex is a so-called "Fire-Beetle". This kind of wheels are mounted on this special modell.
The roof is from VW, only the small ragtops, which were available in Germany were installed in Germany by private firms.
Greets from rainy Germany to where you are

Just to clear things but not to repeat anything, I post the link to your threat at thesamba.com.

The guys are right, the wheels on your bug are official VW accessoires and metallic paintwork could be ordered on every Mexican Beetle.
Different shades of silver paint were available since August 1996.
The tops were installed after the cars left the production line. The official German importer once told me, that a few of them were converted in the VW factory, but most of them were aftermarket.
One of the Mexican companies who converted the bugs was 'Auto Clasicos y Desportivos SA de CV (See link below). I guess, it doesn't exist anymore.

There was a German Companyas well, Wensauer, who created their own version of the rollback top which is slightly different and it's less durable because they just didn't kept things that easy than the Mexicans.
The rollback top was introduced in 1995. Not too much of the rollback cars have been built, maybe a thousand something - a lot of them were imported to Europe. But from 1998 model year on only very view have been exported to th US but none to Europe.
