fuel pump relay / indicator relay problem

Hi everyone
I have a problem with my 95 1600i and i was wondering if anyone else has had the same one. I was changing the fuel sender on my car as guage has been misreading for a while (guage still reads half full when tank is empty!) when i turned on ignition again there was a noise like ablown fuse. I checked fuses, all ok - then tried to start the car. It was just turning over , not firing, and no fuel pump noise. The alarm module was buzzing too - alarm not going off but module buzzing. I turned alarm on and off and alarm module stopped buzzing! Car would still not start so i took off relay no 80 fuel pump relay and bridged it. Fuel pump works and car fires.
So it looks like something wrong with relay no 80, but also indicators and indicator warning light on speedo do not work. I then noticed oil and voltage lights do not work anymore either. Speedo still lights up, full beam warning lights up and hazard lights work and indicator warning light when hazards used.
So i have to work out if problem is with alarm module or relay no 80 and indicator relay - or all three! I do not understand why this happened though and why whatever problem it is was not protected by a fuse.
Has anyone else experienced a similair problem?

Hiya Paul,

It sounds like a common electrical fault to me. It could be any of the following:-

- Defective battery (eg. does the battery only turn the engine over for a very brief period of time?)

- Wiring harness (but quite unlikely)

- Corroded connections (eg. relay box). If they are corroded then use a fibreglass pen brush to clean them up.

- Intermittant connectors. Check the condition of the spade connectors at the fuse box its self (again pretty unlikely).

- Poor, tarnished or corroded fuse box connections. The same applies if they are suspect.

the wiring flow diagram would certainly help, i think it could be a problem with alarm module but the diagram would help a lot!
